A: The RI (Recommended Intake) is the level of a nutrient that is considered to be sufficient to meet the requirements of 97-98% of healthy individuals. At particular stages in life we have higher requirements for different nutrients, particularly due to different stages of hormonal imbalance. Most of the nutrients are B vitamins and are water soluble, any extra taken in than the body requires will be excreted in the urine. When the body is under stress, it requires 50% more B vitamins. Urine will appear more yellow in colour due to the waste products of B vitamins (especially Vitamin B2 - Riboflavin) being broken down. Vitamin D3 is also higher than RI because oestrogen protects our bones and heart and as oestrogen decreases at menopause it can affect bone health. Vitamin D is very important for Calcium absorption.
