Voltarol Emulgel Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel contains the active substance diclofenac which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is specially formulated for rubbing into the skin and has enhanced skin permeation. The active substance targets deep inflamed tissues. Voltarol Emulgel Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel is used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and swelling in a number of painful conditions affecting the joints and muscles, e.g. sprains, strains and bruises, relieving pain quickly, including moderate to strong pain, and helping recovery to normal function.
Directions for use
For adults and adolescents 14 years and over: Voltarol Emulgel Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel provides lasting pain relief of up to 12 hours (applied 2 times daily - morning and evening). It should be rubbed gently into the skin at the affected area. The amount needed depends on the size of the painful area: 2 g to 4 g (a quantity ranging in size from a cherry to a walnut) of gel is sufficient to treat an area of about 400-800 cm². After application, the hands should be washed, unless they are the site being treated. It is recommended that treatment be limited to 14 days.If the condition does not improve or worsens within 7 days of starting treatment, patient should consult their doctor to exclude an alternative underlying cause of pain.
In adolescents aged 14 years and over, if this product is required for more than 7 days for pain relief or if the symptoms worsen the patient/parents of the adolescent is/are advised to consult a doctor.
Warnings and Precautions
Do not use on broken skin or one skin wounds.
This product should only be used with great caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatic or renal insufficiency, or bleeding diathesis, or intestinal inflammation.
This product can be used with non-occlusive bandages but should not be used with an airtight occlusive dressing.
Discontinue the treatment if a skin rash develops after applying the product.
Do not smoke or go near naked flames – risk of severe burns. Fabric (clothing, bedding, dressings, etc) that has been in contact with this product burns more easily and is a serious fire hazard.
Washing clothing and bedding may reduce product build-up but not totally remove it
Pregnancy
Do not take if you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy, You should not take during the first 6 months of pregnancy unless absolutely necessary and advised by your doctor.
Breastfeeding
Voltarol should only be used during lactation under advice from a healthcare professional.
Contradictions
Voltarol Emugel Extra Strength is contraindicated in the followin groups: Patients with or without chronic asthma in whom asthma, angioedema, urticaria or acute rhinitis are precipitated by aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Hypersensitivity to diclofenac, acetylsalicylic acid or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Hypersensitivity to any other ingredient of the gel. During the last trimester of pregnancy. The use in children and adolescents aged less than 14 years is contraindicated.
Gently rub or massage in a small amount of gel into the skin around painful or swollen area.
- An amount ranging in size from 1 penny to a 2 pence piece will usually be sufficient. However, the amount of gel needed will vary depending upon the size of the painful or swollen area (maximum daily dosage 8g). Apply 2 times daily (preferably morning and evening) unless your doctor or pharmacist tells you otherwise.
