Benylin Cough Medicine (Original Formula) is indicated for the relief of cough and associated congestive symptoms.
The traditional formula contains two ingredients: an antihistamine and a cough suppressant. This product is suitable for use in the treatment of non-productive coughs (where no phlegm is present) and congestive symptoms caused by allergies.
The antihistamine contained in Benylin Cough Medicine can cause drowsiness.
Warning
Do not use with any other product containing diphenhydramine.
Patients with moderate to severe renal or hepatic dysfunction should exercise caution when using this product.
Patients with the following conditions should be advised to consult a physician before using Benylin Cough Medicine: Acute or chronic bronchial asthma, a persistent or chronic cough such as occurs with smoking, chronic bronchitis or emphysema or where cough is accompanied by excessive secretions. Narrow angle glaucoma. Prostatic enlargement with urinary retention.
This product may act as a cerebral stimulant in children and occasionally in adults. Symptoms of overdosage include insomnia, nervousness, hyperpyrexia, tremors and epileptiform convulsions. Large doses of antihistamines may precipitate attacks in epilepsy.
Diphenhydramine may enhance the sedative effects of central nervous system depressants including alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers. While taking this product, avoid alcoholic beverages and consult a healthcare professional prior to taking with central nervous system depressants such as: opioid analgesics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antihistamines, antiemetics, antipsychotics, anxiolytic sedatives and hypnotics.

This medicine contains 1.0g sucrose, 3.5g glucose and 6.75mg invert sugar per 5 ml dose. This should be taken into account in patients with diabetes mellitus.
