Feeling worried about your child’s fever? We’ve got all the tips you need to manage it effectively! Stay on top of their medication schedule with dosing charts. Remember, while fevers are often from common infections and not serious, it’s important to consult your GP if symptoms persist.
What do I do if my child has a fever?
Take their temperature
Dress your child normally – children with fever should not be under dressed or over wrapped
Do not use a cool cloth or sponge to get their temperature down
Use either paracetamol or ibuprofen if they are upset or unwell
Can I give my child paracetamol and ibuprofen if they are already on an antibiotic?
Yes.
Will paracetamol and ibuprofen stop febrile convulsions (fever fit)?
No. They will not prevent febrile convulsions and you should not use them specifically for this purpose.
How do I give my child paracetamol and ibuprofen?
Usually paracetamol or ibuprofen alone is sufficient to reduce a child’s fever. However, if you have been recommended to give a combination of ibuprofen or paracetamol you can alternate between giving paracetamol and ibuprofen. You need to wait the appropriate time between doses of each medicine and not to exceed the daily dose of either.
It can be useful to keep a diary of doses given and times and the child’s temperature.
Read the label on bottle you are administering for appropriate doses for your child.
